About the Orchestra:
The Lubbock Civic Orchestra is a vibrant, all-volunteer ensemble dedicated to bringing orchestral music to the South Plains region. We strive to create a welcoming and collaborative musical environment where musicians of all backgrounds come together to perform, learn, and share the joy of music with the Lubbock community. The orchestra performs multiple concerts annually, featuring a mix of classical favorites, contemporary works, and community collaborations.
About the Concertmaster:
The Concertmaster is the leader of the fi rst violin section and plays a critical role in the musical leadership of the orchestra. As the top string player, the Concertmaster works closely with the Music Directors to set a high standard of performance and to guide the ensemble artistically. This position is ideal for a strong violinist who is passionate about music, enjoys working with a team of dedicated volunteers, and wants to help shape the artistic direction of a growing civic ensemble.
Key Responsibilities:
● Lead the fi rst violin section and serve as a key musical liaison between the conductor and orchestra
members.
● Perform any concertmaster solos or featured passages as required.
● Lead the orchestra in tuning and help establish section unity.
● Work with the Music Directors and string principals to determine bowings and ensure consistency across
string sections.
● Attend all rehearsals, performances, and sectional meetings.
● Support the recruitment and audition process for new string players.
● Represent the orchestra with professionalism and enthusiasm in the community and at public events.
Qualifi cations
● An 80% attendance rate for rehearsals and performance is required.
● Advanced profi ciency on the violin with signifi cant orchestral and/or chamber music experience.
● Prior experience as a concertmaster or principal string player is preferred but not required.
● Strong leadership and communication skills.
● A collaborative, positive attitude and a commitment to musical excellence.
● Passion for community engagement and the mission of a volunteer ensemble.
Compensation:
This is a volunteer position. While no fi nancial compensation is provided, the role offers meaningful artistic leadership opportunities, community visibility, and the chance to make a lasting impact on the cultural life of Lubbock.
